There have been developments of standards in the field of search and rescue (INSARAG) respectively emergency medical teams (EMT) within the last decades which facilitate international cooperation. Central questions of the workshop: which processes and measures have facilitated the development of standards in these domains and can other thematic fields of work (particularly the wildfire management) learn from that?

Declared goal of the EU Civil Protection Mechanism (UCPM) is to strengthen disaster response by enhanced cooperation between EU member states and other participating states. Since 2002 about half of the 126 submitted requests were related to wildfires. At the same time wildfire management poses to be a very diverse domain in disaster management. Training standards, practices and used equipment vary immensely throughout Europe. Even if the lack of standards does not hamper the deployment of EU civil protection mechanism experts and resources, the topic of interoperability remains of utmost importance for the European disaster management. Background of this workshop is the observable increasing demand for harmonization and standardization for operations consisting of multiple member states and in cross-border crisis situations.
